Description

These two Astrobin Debut Objects are located in the constellation of Piscis Austrinus at a declination of -34 degrees.  Like most close galaxy pairs in the heavens, these 2 are visually superimposed at different distances.  The two galaxies are too far apart to be interacting with each other.

IC 5156 is a magnitude 12 spiral galaxy located 120 million light years away.  It spans 2.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 90,000 light years. It appears to us at about 20 degrees from edge-on.  Despite this high angle, some of the galaxy structure is visible to us.  A mid-region ring surrounds the core and fragmented arms extend out in a chaotic pattern.

PGC 67907 is a dimmer but more interesting object.  It is a beautiful magnitude 13.5 barred grand design spiral galaxy, located further away at 170 million light years. This is a Milky Way sized galaxy that is 120,000 light years in diameter.
